Netflix has announced a feature-length animated film focused on Cinderella’s stepsisters. The project, titled Steps, aims to reinterpret the well-known fairy tale and show the lives of Lilith and Margot from a fresh perspective.
In the story, Lilith is accused of stealing a magic wand and ruining the royal ball. Nobody listens to her explanations — and things get even worse when she accidentally turns her sister Margot into a frog. To undo the damage, Lilith has no choice but to ask Cinderella for help.
Lilith will be voiced by comedian Ali Wong, while Margot will be played by actress Stephanie Hsu. The film will be co-directed by John Ripa, known for Raya and the Last Dragon, and Alice Xue, who makes her feature debut after winning a Student Academy Award.
Producers include Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell and Kim Lessing. The project was first rumored in 2021, when comedians Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci were involved — but neither is currently attached.
Steps is expected to premiere in 2026, promising a classic fairy-tale atmosphere with a humorous twist and characters who finally get to tell their own story.
